The Story
The St John Ambulance Caring for Kids course is an online course for anyone who regularly or intermittently cares for infants and children, including parents, grandparents, extended family members, babysitters and nannies.
It provides practical skills and knowledge on identifying and managing a number of common conditions and injuries in infants and children. It also provides information on how to access referral and advice services that can help to determine the need for medical aid.
Some topics covered in the course include:
- Identifying illness and responding to emergencies
- The D.R.S.A.B.C.D. Action Plan
- Choking
- Fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and nappy rash
- Asthma and croup
- Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- Wounds, bleeding and shock
- Burns
- Bites and stings
- Seizures including febrile convulsions
- Other common injuries such as nosebleeds and a knocked-out tooth
The course is easily completed within an hour and provides participants with the confidence and peace of mind to know they will be equipped to handle injuries, illnesses and emergencies when caring for children.
